I. Teaching Aims

1. Reading comprehension: To develop the Ss’ reading abilities, like scanning, skimming, getting the main ideas, taking notes and guessing words.

2. Oral practice : To improve the Ss’ abilities of communication.

                            Notion: Giving advice.

III. Teaching procedure

Step 1  Pre-reading

1.Talk about the procedure of eating.

Have the Ss say the words: taste  -- chew – swallow – digest

2.Supply more new words:

Shakespeare

Francis Bacon

chapter

enlarge

cardigan

hobby

 

3.Talk about Ss’ hobbies and have a discussion.(Part 1)

 

Step 2 While-reading

1.  Read fast to find the answers to the guided questions.

1)  What are the three methods of reading which are described?

2)  What is the most important piece of advice in the text?

2.  Read again and find the main idea for each part.

Part 1: Types of Reading.

Part 2: Some More Tips on Reading .

3.  Rearrange the order in Part 3.

4.  More questions on the passage and deal with some language points as well.

1)  On what does Francis Bacon give us the advice?

2)   What kind of nook are to be tasted? What does “to be tasted” mean?

3)  What kind of books are “ to be swallowed”?

4)  What does “ to be chewed and digested mean? What kind of books are to be read slowly and carefully?

5)  How can you make sure the book is interesting?

6)  What can we do with new words you come across while reading?

7)  If you want to know what to read in English, why should we make a list of all the types of books that we enjoy reading in Chinese?

Homework

1.      Read the whole passage.
