                  ( Unit 15 , Lesson 57 ; SB 3B )

Step 1  Revision & introduction to the text

       Ask the Ss to discuss the following questions:

1.      Do you like reading?  /  Have you enjoy reading some famous short stories and novels? If so, please name some of them.

2.      What good books have you read recently?

3.      What do you enjoy reading most / least? Why?

4.      Do you like the books written by foreign writers?

5.      Which foreign writer(s) do you prefer?

6.      How do you read the books written by him/her?

7.      What do you think of reading skills?

8.      What about study skills?

   

Step 2  Introduction to Francis Bacon & his three methods of reading

       Ask the Ss to read the text fast to find answers to these questions.

1.        What are the three methods of reading described in the passage?

2.        What is the most important piece of advice in the text?

Let the Ss to read through the text ,then check the answers with the class. After that, show the following diagram to the students

Step 3  Listening & reading

        Let the Ss listen to the tape and do Ex.1 on page 81.

        Ask the Ss to discuss Ex.2 and practice orally in class.

 

    Step 4  Reading comprehension

        The purpose of this further reading of the text is to encourage the Ss

    to discover the organization of the text and to find out the key words and phrases as well as topic sentences.

 Step 5  Note making

      Ask the Ss to read the text as quickly as possible once more and write down in their own words the advice that the writer gives in the text. After that, check with the Ss orally.

 

 Step 6  Explanation of some language points

A.     Francis Bacon lived in England from 1561----1626 and became a famous philosopher and statesman. He wrote essays in both English and Latin.

B.     be+不定式的被动式” 表示“某事应当 / 必须 如何做”

常用在通知和说明书里。

eg.  The books you are borrowed are to be returned before Dec. 31.

    This medicine is to be taken three times a day after meals.

    This form is to be filled in in ink.

cf.  be+不定式通常用来表示“按计划或安排将要做的事情”, 或表示上级对下级,父母对子女“下达命令” eg:

    The train is to arrive in Beijing at 10:35 a.m..

    You are to eat all your supper before you watch TV.

C.     Every time 可以用作从属连词,引导时间状语从句:

意为:每次……   eg.

Every time I catch a cold, I have a headache.

Every time He came to Ningbo, he would come to Zhenhai Middle School to visit his former teachers.

D.     unless / if…not

eg. He will accept the job unless the salary is too low.

   He will accept the job if the salary is not too low.(The End)
