Teaching Aids: A recorder, computer, and a projector.

Teaching Demands and Aims:

  1. Go over what the Ss have learned in Lesson 49.
  2. Let the Ss get some knowledge about the central plains of America.
  3. Let the Ss get enough information about the bison and the whole wildlife chain of the plains
  4. Develop the abilities of reading, speaking and listening by learning the passage.

 

Teaching  Procedures

 

STEP 1  Revision

  1. Go over Lesson 49.

Choose some Ss to talk about Lesson 49 with the following dates or 

figures.

STEP 2  Presentation

1.      Find out how much the Ss know about the central plains of America by asking some questions.

2.      Teach the new word Bison by using the picture in the text book and the following pictures and tell the Ss the differences between American bison and European bison.

STEP 3  Reading

  1. Play the tape recording of the text and let the Ss listen to it with the books

closed.

  1. Then check the answers to the questions on page 3.

(1) In what ways did the settlers treat in Native Americans unfairly ?

The settlers killed them, forced them to leave their hunting grounds, broke agreements which they had made, forced them onto poor land, and killed most of the bison on which Native Americans had relied for food.

(2)   What caused a big change in the wildlife on the plains ?

The killing of large numbers of bison changed the whole wildlife chain on the plains.

  1. Let the Ss read the text for some minutes. Then finish Ex.2 Comprehension. Choose some Ss to tell the statements true or false. If false, let the Ss correct them.
  2. Discuss some difficult language points.
  3. Then finish Ex.4 Reference on page 4.

 

Step 4  Practice

     1. Choose some Ss describe what they know about the bison.

(Show the following on the screen while the Ss are talking. )

2. Get some Ss to describe the picture and let the Ss get some knowledge of how Native Americans hunted the bison.  

 

 

3. Offer some topics for the Ss to discuss in pairs.

 

(1) What did the settlers do to Native Americans and bison while moving westwards ?

(2) What’s the result of killing bison ?

   4. Deal with Diagram Completion. First let the Ss complete it, then get some Ss to talk about the whole wildlife chain of the plains according to this diagram.

5. Choose some Ss to report the discussion.             

  

STEP 5  Workbook: Finish exercises for Lesson 50 and check the answers.
