Teaching Aids: A recorder, computer, cup and some bottles.

Teaching Demands and Aims:

  1. Revise DOS and DON’TS.
  2. Master how to give instructions.
  3. Develop the abilities of reading, speaking and listening by learning the passage.

 

Teaching  Procedures

Step 1  Revision

1.      Revise what has learned in the last lesson by offering some situations:

(1) Now let’s suppose this classroom is a chemistry lab and we are all in the lab. Please tell me in the lab what you should do and what you shouldn’t do.

( Show the following on the screen and get some students to make sentences with these phrases. )

 

             DOS

DON’TS

listen / teacher

follow / teacher’s instruction

tidy  / lab

put  / everything / cupboards

  come in / without a teacher

  touch  / unless / teacher

  forget  / turn off / lock

  forget  / wash

 

(2) Now suppose all of you are teachers. Please give some instructions with the expressions on the screen.

Step 2  Presentation

1.Present new words by acting out .Write the new words on the blackboard while asking and answering quesions.

Now please look at the teacher’s desk. What’s on it ?There are three bottles and a cup on it. Let’s see what’s in them.

(Get three Ss to smell the liquid in the bottles.)

( Let one of the Ss smell one bottle) What’s in it ? Petrol.

( Then get another student to smell another bottle) Water? No. That’s caster oil.

( Get another student to smell the third bottle. ) What’s this ? It’s vinegar.

Now please look up and watch what I am doing.

(Then pour the three kinds of liquid into a cup and stir them with a stick.)

What am I doing ? Yes, I am mixing the three kinds of liquid together. What is this called ? Yes, it’s called mixture. Now watch carefully.

( Dip a finger into the mixture and suck another finger )

What did I do just now ? Yes, I dipped one of my fingers into the mixture and sucked a finger.

Have I tasted the mixture ? No, I haven’t. Why ? Because I sucked another finger.

2.      Teach the new words by reading them twice.

 

Step 3  Skimming

1. Play the recording of the passage. Let the Ss listen with the books

closed.

Today I’ll tell you something about a chemistry teacher. He was a little man with thick glasses, but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting. If you want to know him more, please listen to the tape recording. Think about the question while listening:

How did the students feel after they tasted the mixture ? ( They felt the mixture tasted terrible.)

2. Skim

  Now open your books and try to read the passage as quickly as you can, but in silence. While reading please think about this question: Why will Paul never forget his first chemistry teacher? (Because he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting.)

 

Step 4  Intensive Reading

1.      Get the Ss to read the text aloud for some minutes.

2.      Ask some questions.

(1)   What did Paul’s first chemistry teacher look like ?

( He was a little man with thick glasses.)

(2)   What did the teacher do at the beginning of the lesson ?

( He brought out three bottles. )

(3)   What about the three bottles ?

( One was filled with petrol, one with castor oil and one with vinegar .)

(4)   What did the teacher do as the students watched him quietly ?

( He mixed the three together. )

(5)   What did he do after he mixed the three thing together ?

( He held up one of his fingers and showed it to the class. )

(6)   Did the teacher taste the mixture ? (No, he didn’t.)

(7)   What did the students do after the teacher handed the cup to them ? ( Each student dipped a finger into the mixture and sucked it )

(8)   Why did each of the Ss make a face ?

 ( Because the mixture tasted terrible.)

(9)   Did each student do everything as the teacher did ?

 (No, he didn’t.)

So you see, none of the Ss watched carefully enough.

 

Step 5  Discussion

1.      Discuss some difficult sentences.

 (Show the following sentences on the screen.)
(1) One was filled with petrol, one with castor oil and one with vinegar.

   be filled with = be full of

   one with castor oil = One was filled with castor oil.

(2) looking rather pleased = and looked rather pleased.

(3) The mixture tasted terrible.

   taste : (1) link v. (followed by an adj.)

           eg. The dish tasted delicious.

         (2) n. The mixture had a terrible taste.

2.      Discuss what the teacher did and what The Ss did.

(Show the following on the screen. )

        Finish Ex. 2 on page 63 of the workbook.

 

Step 7  Consolidation

Do a game of Describing and Guessing. Let’s see which group is best.

Rules of competition:

1.      Each of the Ss has a chance to the front to describe a teacher who is teaching you now. But you mustn’t tell his name and the subject he teaches. The person describing can get 20 marks.

2.      The students in other three groups can guess. If he guesses the right person, he can get 10 marks.

Homework : 1. Recite the whole passage.

           2. Finish Ex. 3 on page 63.
