The Olympic Games
(SEFC 1A Unit 10)

Teaching purpose:Get the students to know something about the Olympic
Games and to understand the motto of the Olympics.
Teaching aids:Multimedia computer and specially designed
software for English teaching and learning.
Topic:The Olympic Games ( 文字为花体红色 )

Step 1:Introducing the teaching steps ( 文字字幕+音乐背景 )
Step 2:Reviewing the dialogue
On the screen appear two
lovely cartoon characters practising the dialogue. At a certain time, put in
some pictures of horse-riding, shooting, wrestling, sailing, and so on, to
heighten the audio and visual effect. Then ask the students to practise the
dialogue with one of the cartoons. While doing this, the computer can give the
students some words of compliment or encouragement.
Step 3:Teaching
the new words ( 情景画面+背景音乐 )
Teaching new words in some situation can make it easy for
students to learn and memorize the words.
Barcelona:Present the picture of beautiful Barcelona (a city of
Spain).
An athlete:Show a picture of Carl Lewis, a famous player of track
and field.
Gold,medal,prize:Deng Yaping mounted a victory stand and received a gold
medal and prize from Samaranch, chairman of the Olympic Committee.
Motto:“Citius, altius, fortius”——“Swifter, Higher, Stronger”.This is the motto Father Didon chose to symbolize the
meaning of giants at the Olympics.
Swift: Show Carl Lewis making a final sprint in the 100
meters.
Competition:The competition is close.
Compete:Present the pictures of close matches at the Olympics.
Competitor: The competitors are
competing in the 100 meters.
Step 4:Introducing the background information of the Olympics

Quickly show a
chain of pictures about Olympics on the screen.
Symbol: Five
rings or circles, linked together to represent the sporting friendship of all peoples.
The rings also symbolize 5 geographic areas: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia,
and America. Each ring is a different color: blue, yellow, black, green, and
red.
Flag: The
symbol of the 5 rings on a plain white background.

Motto: Citius,
Altius, Fortius. Latin meaning: faster, higher, braver, or in a more modern
rendering, swifter, higher, stronger. The motto was coined by Father Didon, a
French educator, in 1895.
Creed: The
most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just
as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The
essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

Oath: An
athlete of the host country recites the following at the opening ceremony: “ In
the name of all competitors I promise that we will take part in these Olympic
Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true
spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams.”
Both the oath
and the creed were composed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the
modern Games.

Flame: Symbolizes the continuity between the ancient and
modern Games. The
modern version of the flame was adopted in 1936. The torch used to
kindle the flame is first lit by the suns rays at Olympia, Greece, and then
carried to the site of the Games by relays of runners. Ships and planes are
used when necessary.

Step 5:Reading the text( 文字材料+录音材料+背景画面 )
While reading, play the video tape of the opening ceremony of
the 25th Olympic Games. Get the students to see that over 8,000
competitors from more than 150 countries went to Barcelona. Watch part of the
awarding ceremony when the Chinese team got 16 gold medals. Get the students to
have a strong sense of patriotism and to feel proud of being a Chinese. Then get
the students to watch the part of 24th Olympics when Carl Lewis won
four gold medals — in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump
and 4×100- meter relay.
Step 6:True or False Questions:

Show it
sentence by sentence on the screen. Get the students to press Y (Yes) or N
(No). If no, ask them to correct it according to the text. The students can get
feedback information as soon as the computer praises or encourages them.
Step 7:Retelling the text ( 文字材料 )
Ask the
students to do blanks filling and cloze test. (The materials are copied from
the textbook, Ex.3 on page 105 and Ex.1 on page 106.)
Step 8:Discussion
In order
to let the students get a better understanding of the text, and to develop
their ability of thinking, teachers should try to find some deep questions in
the text for the students to discuss:
1). As a
student, how do you understand the Olympic motto?
2). Why
are women not allowed to take part in the old Olympic Games?
3). How
do you understand the last sentence of the text:To hold
the Olympic
Games is a rich prize to a
country?
4).
Connected with our sports meeting, please say something about “The most
important thing is not to win but to take
part”.
5). Do you think we
China can succeed in bidding for the 2008 Olympics?
