Teaching Plan
Step 1
Presentation
1.
do you like
Physics? Why or why not?
2.
What do you
find most interesting in Physics study?
3.
What does
Physics mean to oue daily life?
4.
Do you know
any famous Physics scientists?
5.
What common
characters do they have?
6.
If you are
asked to write an article about a scientist, what subjects will you cover?
Today we will learn a passage about a great scientist
named Einstein.
Let the Ss Skin the text and
finish the time table.
|
In 1879 |
Born in Germany |
|
When he was a
young boy |
Used to ask lots
of questions, didn’t enjoy school, found it hard to get along with others |
|
By the time he
was 14 |
Learned maths
all by himself |
|
From the year he
was 17 |
Studied in
Switzerland, earned money to go on with his studies |
|
In 1905 |
Received a
doctor’s degree |
|
Between
1905-1915 |
Began the
research and studies leading to his new discoveries |
|
In 1918 |
Received
world-wide praise fro his research |
|
In 1921 |
Won the Nobel
Prize for physics: gave talks in many countries |
|
In 1933 |
Left Europe for
the USA; accept the job as a professor; asked for little money; never
interested in becoming rich |
|
In 1940 |
Took American
nationality, spent time working for human rights and progress |
|
In 1955 |
Died at the age
of 76 |
Step 3 reading
Listen the first part and ask
some comprehending questions
Get Ss to read aloud
1)
What did
scientists believe before Einstein?
2)
What did
Einstein prove?
3)
What did he work out?
4)
How did
Einstein become world famous?
5)
What brought
him great sadness?
6)
Why didn’t he
have to join the army?
7)
What did the
want to see?
8)
Why did he
find it impossible to continue living in Germany?
Keys to the
questions:
1)
Scientists believed
that light traveled through space in a straight line before Einstein
2)
Einstein
proved that light coming from the stars as bent as it passed the sun
3)
He worked out
just how much the light would be bent and how far the stars would appear to
have moved
4)
At first many
of the scientists did not accept his scientific ideas. Yet by 1919 scientists
who had been watching the stars supported his work a and he quickly became
world famous
5)
The first
world was brought him great sadness
6)
Einstein had
taken Swiss nationality and therefore did not have to join the army since
Switzerland did not take sides in the war
7)
He wanted to
see and end to all the armies of the world
8)
When Germany
was ruled by Hitler in the early 1930s Einstein who was a Jew, found it
impossible to continue living in Germany.
1)
Why do you
think that many of the scientists would not accept Einstein’s discovery at that
time? Why do you think that Einstein would just stick to his opinion and never
give up? What can you learn from Einstein?
Key for reference:
1)
First, what
Einstein had discovered was completely new, and scientists at that time had
been used to the theory that light travels in a straight line. They could not
understand how Einstein had proved his discovery
2)
Einstein had
proved that light coming from the sun was bet as it passed the stars by working
very hard, by doing a lot of research. He himself had worked out just how much
the light would be bent and how far the stars would appear to have moved. He
believed that what he had done was based on scientific research and he could
prove that. So he stuck to his opinion. We should learn from his scientific
attitude.
Curious about everything
Learned maths all by himself
Childhood shy/not enjoy school

Model: words maybe used
Go up; a box of matches; stick; in silence; geet; have dinner; upstairs hide in another room a scream rush on the floor dead brown snake open metal chest drive the snake back attack its keeper
Mr Holmes and his assistant went up to my bedroom and waited there. I saw the detective put out a box of matches on the table and lay his stick next to it. I did not know why. As soon as they heard my uncle return, they stopped talking and sat in silence.
I greeted my uncle as usual and we had dinner together downstairs. After dinner, I went upstairs and said good night to my uncle. Then I opened my bedroom door and shut it. But I didn't enter. Very quieting I stole into another small room to hide there. It seemed to me that many hours had passed when I heard a sudden scream. It came from my uncle’s room. I rushed there and saw my uncle on the floor, dead. Around his head was a brown snake . Holmes took the snake with a piece of rope, threw it into the open metal chest and shut it. Then he explain to me what had happened. Now I realized how the snake had been driven back to attack its keeper. Anyhow, I was saved.
Step 5 Post- reading
If time permits, ask some students to read the detective stories written by themselves..
